INTRODUCTORY COURSES:
The emphasis at this level is on developing basic everyday vocabulary, learning the English alphabet and numbers, and learning to communicate in essential life skill situations to ease the true beginning student into Level 001. Basic skills are introduced and practiced through listening, speaking, reading and writing.

ESL 001 After this level, students will be able to use the English alphabet and numbers, tell time and count money, complete registration forms, identify family members, follow directions, give addresses, identify parts of a home, read a calendar and communicate in essential real-life situations.

ESL 100 After this level, students will be able to introduce themselves and others, greet people, describe people, ask for and tell time, ask about prices, order food, make requests, read transportation schedules, discuss dates, and birthdays, explain basic directions, describe actions, conduct simple phone conversations, ask basic questions, describe the weather, get and give personal information, express likes, dislikes, preferences, and needs; offer help, apologize, and express disappointment.

ESL 101 After this level, students will be able to exchange personal information, confirm information, offer, accept, and decline invitations, ask for and give directions, politely complain, discuss food and health, exercise, and diet, provide an excuse, describe travel, discuss travel arrangements, discuss buying clothing.

ESL 102 After this level, students will be able to introduce classmates, talk about favorites using likes and dislikes, discuss local customs, discuss hotel amenities, explain how to shop for personal products, discuss driving conditions in their countries, and the U.S., discuss food likes and dislikes, describe personalities, describe and discuss tastes in art, discussing computers and problems, pros and cons of the Internet, express personal values such as dishonesty, and other personal values.

ESL 103 After this level, students will be able to make small talk with a stranger, describe rules of etiquette, discuss cultural changes, describe dental and medical problems, make an appointment, ask for and recommend services, express regrets about life decisions, discuss skills, abilities, and qualifications, ask for and give advice about customs, report what you heard on the news, discuss plans for emergency, describe natural disasters, debating, describe and compare important inventions, warn about risks.

ESL 104 After this level, students will be able to use ‘actually’ to soften a negative response, use ‘you know’ and ‘I wonder’ to elicit opinions, use ‘can you believe’ to indicate disapproval, use ‘don’t you think’ to promote consensus, use ‘do you mind’ to politely point out mistakes, use ‘actually, I hope that’s not a problem’, use ‘I’ve heard’, ‘believe it or not’, and ‘I hate to say it’ to excuse oneself for mistakes.

ESL 105 After this level, students will be able to use ‘you know’ to ease into a conversation, use ‘that’s great’‘well’, and ‘I guess’ to express opinions, ask ‘are you sure’ to confirm information, ask a rhetorical question to grab someone’s attention, provide an example or clarifying statement to support a point of view, use slang to express humor, or retell an event.

ESL 112 - Reading & Writing Intensive Introduction. After this level, students will be able to write grammatically correct sentences using simple present, continuous, and simple past verb tenses, read elementary level texts accurately for comprehension and vocabulary development, have improved handwriting, increase spelling vocabulary, and learn study techniques that will assist them with their future academic endeavors.

ESL 114 - Grammar Review. This class is designed to help students prepare for upper level coursework by reviewing skills from previous levels. It comprises four objectives: to improve reading skills, increase vocabulary, improve writing skills, and serve as a comprehensive review of key grammar points learned in previous levels.

UPPER LEVEL COURSES:
Goal: To teach advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills needed for academic, professional, and personal development. (Note: iBT stands for Internet Based TOEFL, CBT stands for Computer Based TOEFL, and IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System).

ESL 201- Academic Writing and Reading Skills After this level, students will be able to read effectively, use vocabulary-building skills, and write with greater fluency. In class, students will practice creating simple, compound and complex sentences for basic paragraphs using integrated grammar; develop topic, supporting, and concluding sentences; and use the writing process of brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and editing paragraphs. Students also learn and practice phrasal verbs for higher oral fluency.

ESL 202 – Academic Writing II and Listening Skills After this level, students will be able to develop and write connected paragraphs into essays, use listening and note-taking skills and strategies to recount information, and give oral presentations. In class, students will practice writing complete essays, developing a thesis statement, supporting paragraphs and a concluding paragraph; use the writing process of brainstorming, outlining, drafting and editing essays; and give oral presentations. Class time also includes listening to academic lectures, taking effective notes, recounting from notes, and delivering summaries.

ESL 203 – Advanced Oral Communication & Writing After this level, students will be able to make persuasive arguments in oral presentations and in written essays. In class, students learn the structure and fundamentals of persuasive public speeches and essays, delivery techniques, and engage in debates. The writing process is refined for students to produce effective, clear, articulate essays with academic preparation in mind.

ESL 204 – Reading & Writing Intensive After this level, students will be able to analyze reading excerpts for structural objectives and apply structures to their writing. In class, students practice reading for content and for structure, and practice writing tasks to improve sentence structure, paragraph development, and the writing process.

ESL 300 – Advanced Grammar & Writing After this level, students will be able to comprehend authentic video programs in English, analyze listening for structural content, and analyze complex grammar. In class, students watch authentic videos, review and practice specific grammar (adjective and adverbial clauses, parallelism, conditionals, past and present modals) towards understanding authentic English, and practice the grammar through writing.

ESL 301 – Advanced English Through the Media After this level, students will be able to understand newspaper headlines, read print media in English, and listen to authentic radio programs. In class, students explore current and controversial American issues through radio broadcasts, current events magazines, newspapers and TV programs. Students practice discussion and debate, vocabulary skills, and paraphrasing.

ESL 302 – Advanced Reading and Writing After this level, students will be able to write entry-level university papers, conduct basic topical research, and read at the level of college freshmen. Students develop and practice advanced learning strategies for improving reading comprehension and speed, building and retaining new vocabulary, writing in different academic styles, conducting internet research, and writing formal research papers. Daily reading and writing will be expected.

ESL 303 – American Business Culture After this level, students will be able to write business memos and emails, write resumes and cover letters, and make amateur business decisions. In class, students work on using business vocabulary and idioms; writing memos and business letters; writing effective resumes and cover letters; making case decisions about real companies; reading business media and making oral presentations on business topics.

ESL 304 & 305 – American Short Stories Parts 1 & 2 After these levels, students will be able to summarize and analyze American Short Stories in both written and oral form. In class, students will improve their reading comprehension skills, expand their vocabulary, and further enhance their overall discussion and persuasion skills. In addition, students will be able to properly quote and paraphrase parts of literature as well as write college level papers analyzing texts.

American Legal English

Goal: To provide international legal professionals and current or prospective law students knowledge of the American Legal System, communication and writing skills in order to succeed in the US and elsewhere professionally and/or academically.
Offered in 4-week sessions. Classes are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. including educational field trips from Monday through Friday.

ESL 401 – American Legal English The course will expose students to the vocabulary, processes and reasoning behind the American Legal System.  After completion of the course, students will have a basic understanding of the different fields of law, gain an ability to analyze and paraphrase cases, and begin to use the jargon of the American legal profession. The course includes a mixture of writing for legal purposes, case readings, mock trials, guest lawyer lectures of various specialties, and educational fieldtrips hosted by US legal professionals.  Fieldtrips include but are not limited to the DC Bar, the American Bar Association, the Supreme Court, the Capital, the Pentagon, the DC Court, the Arlington County Court, visits to two law schools, and a visit to a reputable local law firm.  Materials Included!

TEST PREPARATION COURSES

Goal: To prepare students at the advanced level only to take entrance exams required for admission to U.S. colleges &universities, and for immigration needs.

ESL 501 – TOEFL I After this level, students will be able to approach the TOEFL test. In class, students are oriented to the listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking, and writing skills required for the rapid identification of correct answers in the timed, multiple-choice, Internet-based TOEFL exam. The four subject areas are analyzed, and test-taking strategies are introduced. Finally, students practice taking full-length TOEFL-type tests in order to develop the knowledge and self-confidence necessary to increase their TOEFL scores, and practice writing timed TOEFL essays. The course is partly computer-based.

ESL 502 – TOEFL II After this level, students will be able to take the TOEFL test with greater confidence. In class, as students are fully familiar with TOEFL, students spend time practicing full tests with guided instruction and feedback, and are given more detailed practice and instruction in the writing and speaking components of the exam, including recorded speaking tests. The course is partly computer-based.

ESL 503 – GRE TestPrep Course After this level, students will be better able to approach the verbal portion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (often required for admission to American graduate schools). In class, students are oriented to the rigors of the GRE, and practice vocabulary and test taking strategies for the verbal portion of the exam. Class time is spent focusing on vocabulary building, analogies, sentence completion, antonyms, analogies, reading comprehension, correcting errors in sentences, and verbal reasoning skills. Students also begin work on writing essays for the Writing Assessment (sometimes required for the GRE test).

ESL 504 – GMAT TestPrep Course After this level, students will be better able to approach the verbal portion of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) (often required for admission to American business schools) In class, students are oriented to the rigors of the GMAT, and practice vocabulary and test tasking strategies for the verbal portion of the exam. In addition, students practice writing essays according to GMAT guidelines. Authentic essay questions from the GMAT test are used and students practice writing on the computer under simulated test conditions.

ESL 505 – IELTS TestPrep Course This course will provide a rigorous training in each of the four sections of the exam – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Students will have intensive practice in each, including mock speaking exams, and both academic and general training strategies in listening, writing and reading. In addition, instructors will provide valuable strategies for IELTS test takers.

ESL 500 – GED & SAT TestPrep Courses Private classes are offered to prepare ESL students for the GED (General Educational Development) or SAT (Standardized Aptitude Test) tests on an individual basis.

INTENSIVE PROFESSIONAL SEMINARS

Offered in 3-week sessions. Morning classes are from 9:00 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Afternoon classes are from 12:55 p.m. to 6:25 p.m.  Evening classes are from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m.

Goal: To prepare students seeking to work or study in the United States with greater professional attributes.

ESL 351 – Accent Reduction Seminar After this level, students will be able to speak with more natural American intonation and rhythm, and understand the speech of native English speakers more clearly. In this 3-week seminar, students practice variations in intonation, sound linking, and rhythm exercises; give oral presentations; record and review their speaking progress; and learn about American accents and culture.

ESL 361 – The Microsoft Office 2007 Seminar After this level, students will be able to create Word documents of various styles, crunch numbers in Excel, and create visual slide shows with animation and charts in Power Point for presentation purposes. These objectives enable students to better handle US university coursework requirements and/or projects in their work places. In class, students will learn computer vocabulary/terminology, do written and visual presentation assignments, work with spreadsheets and formulas, and use Office templates to enhance their work.

140-HOUR INTENSIVE TEFL CERTIFICATE COURSE
Offered in 4-week or 8-week sessions.

4-Week Session classes are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

8-Week Session classes are from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
(Note: All teachers of these classes hold at least a Masters Degree in Education.)

Goal: To prepare students and residents seeking to teach ESL/EFL in the United States or abroad at the post-secondary level. Candidates can register for all classes, which would equal 2 intensive classes, or take them one by one, over a two-month period. All TEFL classes are open to F-1 students. Non-native speakers of English may be required to have an oral interview prior to the class as part of the application process to assure a strong oral ability.  (A Bachelors Degree is required for teaching positions at inlingua and certain other organizations.  Please check with prospective employers for additional information about their requirements.)

ESL 601 – Making It Happen Methodology of Language Teaching In this class, we will study the latest methods of language teaching, and how it can apply to a real live working classroom. We will explore many different factors that assist in or impede language learning such as motivation, language interference, and multi-cultural awareness. The goals of the class include providing an understanding of different approaches to teaching language, what is effective, and why.

ESL 602 – Techniques for Teaching English In this class, trainees will practice many fun, memorable, and effective ways of teaching specific language points. Trainees will be exposed to a multitude of different games, activities, and lessons involving grammar, writing, reading, listening, vocabulary, fluency and accuracy. The main purpose of this class is to teach specific grammar points, and other topics to teach using the most effective methods and techniques; putting theory to practice. During this class, trainees will be exposed to and become familiar with all aspects of English grammar. Other aspects of this class will include assessment techniques, exposure to popular materials, exposure to and familiarization with the IELTS and TOEFL tests, and assistance in analyzing effective ESL programs and designs. The goal of this class is to familiarize trainees with many different aspects of a live ESL classroom, such as assessment, motivation, and classroom management.

ESL 600 – Practicum This portion of the certificate program is scheduled in conjunction with the other two classes listed above. Students enrolling in either of the previous two classes will automatically be enrolled in the Practicum. This class is divided into three separate portions: a 40-hour Practicum in which trainees observe, study, and evaluate on-going ESL classes; a 10-hour co-teaching component where trainees plan, and execute ESL lessons, and receive peer feedback; and the last component consists of a supervised 5-hour private student case study.
