Oral Track Program Details

The inlingua Oral Track program offers nine levels, OT1 to OT5.

GROUP CLASSES

INTENSIVE MORNING (A & B versions)
Students must buy the split A & B versions of the text
MONDAY – FRIDAY 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.

INTENSIVE AFTERNOON and EVENING (A & B versions)
Students must buy the split A & B versions of the text
MONDAY- THURSDAY: 12:55 p.m.to 5:25 p.m.,
5:30 p.m.to 10:00 p.m.

SEMI-INTENSIVE AFTERNOON and EVENING (i, ii, & iii versions)
Students must buy the full version text.
MONDAY- THURSDAY: 1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., 6:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

SATURDAY (i, ii, & iii versions)
Students must buy the full version text.
SATURDAY: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

inlingua Oral Track Courses

Goal: To provide students an opportunity to concentrate on practicing and improving speaking, listening, and pronunciation skills.

Course Offerings

OT1A Beginner. At the end of this level, students will be able to ask for and give directions, count money, spell out words, greet people, talk about possessions and prices, talk about daily and weekly routines, discuss hobbies, describe clothing, and hold basic conversations on real life scenarios such as checking in for a flight, making appointments, or talking about work and family.

Grammar: commands; simple time with ‘to be’; it’s + adjective/time/money; parts of speech; can/can’t; ‘how much’, ‘how about’; simple questions.  Lexis: Polite greetings and introductions, and lexis related to basic food and drink, traveling, workplace, language, telephone, address, home and furniture, family, and shopping

OT1B High Beginner. At the end of this level, students will be able to give compliments, place orders in a restaurant, discuss transportation schedules, describe locations and geography, clear customs at immigration, describe past actions, describe rural and urban environments, make weather predictions, describe intentions, and make arrangements for future travel.

Grammar: simple present (‘to be,’ ‘to have’, ‘to like’, ‘to want,’ and ‘to need’); present continuous; pronouns; adjectives; prepositions; indefinite/definite articles; singular/plural forms; countable/uncountable nouns; ‘wh- questions; simple past; present continuous vs. simple present; future (‘going to’); present modal and auxiliary verbs; adverbs of frequency and manner; possessive pronouns; ‘wh- questions.’ Lexis: vocabulary related to: daily routines, time, schedules, meals, calendar, clothing, actions, shapes, asking directions, transport, geography, and weather.

OT1i, OT1ii, OT1iii Beginner to High Beginner. This is the semi-intensive version of OT1 A & B. The material is the same, but it takes three terms to complete one level instead of two. Each term, students will cover 10 chapters.
(Note: The book is a different version. Students will buy one book for all three classes.)

OT2A Low Intermediate. At the end of this level, students will be able to describe languages and language learning needs, check into a hotel, discuss sports, discuss memories, plan accommodation and travels, communicate on the telephone, discuss past travel and work experiences, and describe regulations, recommendations, and procedures.

Grammar: comparative and superlative adjectives; present perfect; infinitive of purpose; comparison of adverbs; use of could; so/neither; used to; adjectives + infinitives; and who/that/which (in relative clauses). Present continuous (for the future); future with will; phrasal verbs; tag questions; past continuous; would like to, must, shall (for offers), may (for permission), must (for obligation) and should. Talking about quantity, using too/enough, both/neither/all/none, and ’Which (one)’…?. Lexis: Vocabulary related to statistics and figures, hotels, biographical information, making forecasts and predictions, travel arrangements, phone communications, transportation networks, games and rules, complaints, bookings, and exaggeration.

OT2B Intermediate: At the end of this level, students will be able to discuss theoretical problems and suggest solutions, describe symptoms and go to the doctor, discuss problems, ask for product information, make/accept/decline offers, use polite/surprise reactions, discuss past habits, describe hobbies in detail, explain how things have changed, meet old acquaintances, give

historical information, and describe traffic.

Grammar: Present perfect continuous tense; phrasal verbs and gerunds vs. infinitives with specific verbs; contrary-to-fact conditional sentences; and reflexive pronouns, future tense with will; phrasal verbs; tag questions; past continuous; would like to, must, shall (for offers), may (for permission), must (for obligation) and should. Talking about quantity, using too/enough, both/neither/all/none, and “Which (one)…?” Lexis: vocabulary and phrases related to explaining procedures, regulations, recommendations, tourism, solutions to problems, describing relationships, symptoms, health, products and prices, currency, traditions and customs, hobbies and interests, eating and lifestyle habits, and historical information.

OT2i, O21ii, O21iii Low Intermediate to Intermediate. This is the semi-intensive version of OT2 A & B. The material is the same, but it takes three terms to complete one level instead of two. Each term, students will cover 10 chapters.

OT3A Upper Intermediate. At the end of this level, students will be able to describe places in detail, talk about why they enjoy certain activities, describe homes and decorations, explain recipes and cooking techniques, express wishes and opinions, debate issues, discuss TV programs and plots, express regrets, advise tourists on tourist sites, describe continuous and conclusive future actions (tentative and decided plans for the future), and talk about rules and regulations at work.

Grammar: introduction to 3rd conditional; perfect modals; adjectives with ed/ing; to (refuse, promise) to and gerunds (think about +ing); review of prepositions; phrasal verbs and slang; review and extension of 1st and 2ndconditional; future continuous and future perfect; past modals (should have, could have); ‘get’ as passive’; ‘must have’, ‘can’t have’. Lexis: vocabulary and phrases related to quality of life, homes and interiors, materials, agreement, disagreement, expressing opinions, means of travel, speculation, movies and storylines, the human body, extended family, tourism, and immigration.

OT3B Upper Intermediate /Low Advanced. At the end of this level, students will be able to discuss traditions and celebrations, understand informal English of native speakers, explain and talk about numerical conversions and weights/measures/currencies, understand newspaper headlines, discuss education issues, write and discuss letters, make emphatic comparison, discuss animals, complain, apologize, make forceful arguments, discuss political issues, defend a point, discuss UK/US differences, express varying degrees of certainty, compare memories and experiences, and understand quotations and some cultural humor.

Grammar: conjunctions; overall review of plural forms; reduced speech in headlines; review of tag questions; quantifiers; adverbs of degree; idioms in advertising; reported speech verbs; review of all future tenses; imperatives review; extension of passive voice, ‘would’ for past events; mixed conditionals; comparative adjectives; inversion (never before, not since…); contrast of all past tenses. Lexis: vocabulary and phrases related to rules in the workplace, festivals and celebrations, informal language, numerical data, newspapers, education, animals, debate, politics, memories, and humor.

OT3i, OT3ii, OT3iii Upper Intermediate to Low Advanced. This is the semi-intensive version of OT3 A & B. The material is the same, but it takes three terms to complete one level instead of two. Each term, students will cover 10 chapters.
(Note: The book is a different version. Students will buy one book for all three classes.)

OT4A Advanced. At the end of this level, students will be able to give detailed biographical details, check assumptions, explain and defend points of view, understand advertisements, compare expectations with reality, speculate on the future, respond to and refuse requests politely, persuade others, express strong personal views, describe performances, participate in formal debates, and discuss constitutional issues.
Grammar: Review of passive voice; review of all past tenses; review of tag questions; reduced forms; review of reported speech; negative questions; passive verb forms with ‘have’ and ‘get’; to ‘do’ and ‘go’ + ing; adjective order, ‘do’ vs. ‘make’; ‘used to’ for past routine; inverted word order; review of quantifiers; connectors such as ‘although’, ‘despite’, ‘in spite of’. Lexis: vocabulary and phrases related to advertisements, flora and fauna, and speaking conventions such as reacting to statements, explaining and defending points of view, demurring and refusing, persuading, and qualifying.

OT4B High Advanced. At the end of this level, students will be able to address official personnel, describe mechanical faults, understand road signs, change the subject of a conversation, address disputed points, express defiance, give opinions on personal characteristics/appearances, make confident assertions, qualify generalizations, give tourists information, express bewilderment and doubt; ask and grant permission, describe art, make changes in travel arrangements, contrast positive and negative debate points, and offer encouragement/support.

Grammar: review of infinitives +to, verbs + object+ infinitives; to be supposed to + infinitive; review of verbs + ing; contrastive review of present continuous and present simple; reported speech; conditionals for future; nouns formed from adjectives; questions as statements; review of both/some/all/most/none of. Lexis: vocabulary and phrases related to art, news, advice and support, religion, crime, trends, and speaking conventions such as reacting to statements, debating, changing the subject, expressing defiance, drawing attention to a topic, making enquiries, extending invitation, giving opinions, expressing doubts, sympathizing, and appropriate use of slang and idioms.

OT4i, OT4ii, OT4iii Advanced to Advanced. This is the semi-intensive version of OT4 A & B. The material is the same, but it takes three terms to complete one level instead of two. Each term, students will cover 10 chapters. (Note: The book is a different version. Students will buy one book for all three classes.)

OT5 Advanced to Fluent: At the end of this level, students will be able to effectively express and justify opinions; give persuasive speeches and presentations, contrast and address opposing viewpoints, express agreement and disagreement tactfully or forcefully, describe and analyze social behavior, describe economic trends, describe personal and professional skills, undertake successful interviews, participate in negotiations, and discuss problems analytically.

Grammar: Grammar at this level is addressed on a need to review basis, determined by the context of the learners in the class. Lexis: vocabulary and phrases related to expressing points of views, making predictions, expressing pros and cons, teamwork, describing data and data trends, character building, hindsight, presenting plans and problems, and the art of conversation.
